I finally did it! I spent some of my blog money to buy my very own domain name. I looked it up at Go Daddy and just bought it with my Paypal. Using a Go Daddy coupon code: CJC695DOM I found here, I was able to save $3 per year off my purchase which brings down the total to $6.99 per year.

Since I don’t want my Google juice to go down, I would still be hosting my blog on WordPress.com so I bought their domain mapping upgrade for one year ($10), again using my Paypal. This way all my posts, links and visitors will automatically be redirected to CalvinsHub.com.
So to all of you who has a link to my blog, kindly update your link. Thanks!!

Wow. The US men’s basketball team was impressive against the silver medalist of 2006 FIBA World Championship, Greece. A bit of payback for beating them on the semifinal round of that tournament. This win means that they are ready and have a strong chance of redeeming the basketball Olympic gold. They gave Team Greece a good whooping as they cruised to a 92-69 victory.

Tomorrow would be an exciting match for Team USA as they go against Spain. If Greece won the silver medal on the 2006 FIBA, Spain won the gold. Both are 3-0 in the preliminaries and the match would probably be a preview of the finals.
Spain has the Gasol brothers who can give USA some matchup trouble with their small lineup. They also have Jose Calderon, a rising point guard in the NBA playing with the Toronto Raptors. Not to mention another guard, Rudy Fernandez who was phenomenal on their first three games. It’s really gonna be a good and exciting game.
So better catch it live tomorrow (Aug. 16) on bTV at 10:15PM (Manila time).

If you haven’t seen the USA vs Angola game, you should try to catch it on replay. It was full of highlight moves as Angola just can’t keep up with the Americans.
Although there’s this Angolan guard, Carlos Morais, who was just spectacular in the 4th quarter against Team USA’s bench. In one play, the game’s high scorer breezed past by Chris Paul and the rest… off the dribble! You gotta be lightning quick to do that. He also had a jam where he relegated defense specialist Tayshaun Prince to just an onlooker.
The Angolans are simply no match against the superior American team who won 97-76. I really pity the person assigned to guard Kobe Bryant. Even in the NBA, nobody can effectively guard Bryant one on one. Props to the Angolans though for qualifying in this event.
But the real test for the US team should be on their next game tomorrow against one of the powerhouse, Greece. Catch it live on bTV at 8PM.
USA Men’s Basketball Team Schedule
Here’s the rest of Team USA’s men’s basketball schedule for the preliminary round.
- Aug 14 - USA vs Greece - 8 PM
- Aug 16 - USA vs Spain - 10:15 PM
- Aug 18 - USA vs Germany - 8 PM (Chris Kaman plays for the Germans)
You can catch the games live if you have bTV. They also air the replay in the following morning.

There’s this ad in the Spanish-language newspaper La Marca prior to the Games that recently surfaced where Spain’s Olympic basketball team appears to be slanting their eyes. Check it out.

What’s weird is that nobody from the team or the newspaper considered that the ad would be a bit offensive to the Olympic’s host country. Even though it was all in good fun, lots of people particularly the Chinese would be upset. Having the power of the Internet didn’t help bury the issue either.
Anyway, the Spanish team got a lot of boos during their game against China yesterday. It wasn’t enough to force an upset though as one of the strongest team in the Olympics won against China in overtime, 85-75.
Just for fun or clearly a racist ad?

Yup! Today, August 13 at 4:15 PM, Brad Pitt will face off against Morocco’s Mohammed Arjaoui in the Men’s Heavyweight division in boxing. Ranked #33 in the World Championships, he will try to bring in a medal as a member of the Australian Olympic boxing team.

Nope, it’s not the Fight Club Brad Pitt but an Australian who shares his name and has to put up with the occasional taunts. “Mate, I’ve been living with that other bloke’s name for years, it doesn’t worry me at all,” he told Australia’s Herald Sun while practicing for the 2008 Games.
“I’ve always been Brad,” he tells the Daily Telegraph. “Let him change his name.”
So if you tell your friends that you saw Brad Pitt’s fight at the Olympics would they believe you?

There goes our medal hopes for our women’s weightlifting. 17-year old Hidilyn Diaz failed to get any medal on the Womens 58kg Weightlifting event yesterday (Aug. 11) finishing 2nd to the last .
Ok, so who’s Erlina “Lily” Pecante?

Image from ZestPowerGym.com
If you haven’t googled her name yet, she’s just the world-record holder in the women’s 90-kg squat event who won our country 4 gold medals in the Asian Powerlifting Championship held in Uzbekistan last May. Pretty impressive for a postal office worker huh?
So why didn’t she compete in the Olympics?
Well it’s because she’s a powerlifter which is quite different from an Olympic weightlifter. In weightlifting, a person raises a barbell from the floor to over his head while in powerlifting, movements are shorter. For example, in the squat event of powerlifting, an athlete stands under a racked barbell, lifts the barbell, squats and stands up.
Training and conditioning for powerlifting and weighlifting is very different so Lily might not excel in the Olympics unlike in the APC. She needs to re-condition her body for weightlifting to do well. Maybe if powerlifting becomes part of the weightlifting event in the Olympics we’d probably win a gold with Lily.
